Employment Practice Liability Question
Should companies disclose possible layoffs?

SALT LAKE CITY — If the company you work for is thinking about cutting jobs in a few months, would you want to know about it now or later?
When a company is going through rough financial times, the president of The Employers Council says it shouldn’t hide it from its workers. “The best approach for companies is to be honest and open with their employees,” Monica Whalen said.
However, she advises companies not to announce too soon there might be layoffs because valuable talent could leave.
It’s kind of a toss-up. Some experts say hearing about potential layoffs can cause unnecessary stress to all workers; others say knowing cuts will be coming makes it easier to accept if it happens.
